MM 162 Gatling gun bullet
« on: March 03, 2024, 12:15:29 AM »
I?m reaching out to this forum for ideas, theories, or information about MM 162, the so called Gatling gun bullet. Where I don?t believe this description is correct, I don?t believe it is a soldier altered or carved bullet either. The one in my collection shows no evidence of that. I know a lot of ?Bullet and Shell? followers make it to relic shows during the year, I would also if it were possible, has anybody ever seen a fired one?, dug one up? Are they rarely found? Where? I have seen very few in dealers listings over the years, and only one ID?d a recovery site.  Thanks for reading!

My understanding is the Gatlin Gun is a late war manifestation.  I don't remember seeing many examples fired or otherwise being offered for sale, but I am new to this hobby.  Some of the more established collectors will be able to help you.

Thanks for your response, I am curious about how many of these rounds exist in collections, dealer stocks etc., and where dug.

Based on what I know, it is in the Arkansas Hog range, rarity 6-7 maybe.  Most bullets that are "rare" are not going to be found on websites for sale.  You will have to go to shows or network to find them.  For that reason, its hard to know how many of the Gatlin gun examples are out there, or if anyone has ever focused on collecting sites where they were used.  Hopefully other will chime in.

I never figured on them being close to that rare! I bought one from a mail order list in 1994 for $2, and I thought they may be not be real common, but more like a ?US? base Springfield. Due to disability and distance, I haven?t been able to scope out a relic show or check out the availability of certain bullets.

Do any of you forum readers have one in your collections? or have any thoughts on what weapon these rounds were intended for?
