I know I have read on here previously about a certain guy from Tennessee on Ebay who keeps listing cartridges as original when in fact they are repro. Besides being underpriced for the most part, what else could I or anyone else look for to ID the real thing, or is this a trial and error/learn from experience type of thing?

Roy, I wish I could provide guidance on the validity of cartridges but I strictly collect the lead end of the cartridge. Hopefully some of the experts on cartridges will pipe in on this topic or guide you to the best reference books which I imagine would be several of the Thomas Brothers publications.

Yes the "Strawberry Plains" guy is very active again. Just saw a few on his list the other day. Unfortunately, having experience looking at many, many original cartridges is the key. One example, he has (or had) a Sharps ringtail listed. It looked pretty good, but was tied with entirely too much string...like 5 or 6 loops around instead of just one, like on every specimen Dean and have in our collections. Other things to look at are the paper, the crispness of the folds on the tail, the string, and details on the bullet that are unique to that specific round.

Thanks for the replies. I am sticking to just the lead part for now but I know things will change in the future...

A lot more of them are coming out of Narvon, Pennsylvania.

I am still here. Not as often as I wish. Lots of traveling and having youthful fun. Working a lot and trying to be productive!
