Remembering The Great Ones / Dean Thomas

Early this afternoon Dean ended his three month struggle with lung cancer. Dean was my older brother by about 14 years. He should be remembered as a fine husband, father, brother, relic hunter, author, and publisher.  As far as this group goes, his life-time of collecting and ground breaking and extensive research regarding Civil War small arms resulted in "Ready, Aim, Fire, Small Arms Ammunition at Gettysburg", "Round Ball to Rimfire" (4 volumes), "Confederate Arsenals, Laboratories, and Ordnance Depots" (3 volumes) and numerous other reference works. Dean leaves a large void in the area of Civil War ordnance research!

Wac-a-mole!!!!

My condolences to his family and friends, including yourself.
I never dug with too many people other than my dad. It?s nice to look at some of the things we dug together and remember the good times especially since he?s passed.

Perhaps you can do the same if you have some of the relics you dug with John.

Mike,  you have an incredible collection.  The base display makes me want to look harder at my P's and 57's.  Thanks for sharing.

Artillery / Re: Orignal Field Gun Carriages

There are some around, but they are rare and command quite a premium.  Original wheels are actually more common to find.  I bought a boat howitzer a few years ago (that was by the way on its original carriage), and in the same place the guy had 21 original wheels lines up along the wall.  I tipped off a friend of mine who got several of them.  I think the late Charlie Smithgall got the rest.

The carriage on my boat howitzer was metal, but the wheels were wooden and original.  They needed some TLC to tighten them up which Tom Bailey of Historical Ordnance Works did in a master craftsman-like and minimally invasive way.

Also a few collectors like to get carriages built with original irons.  These too command a significant premium, but are easier to get than ones with original wood.

If he was a friend of yours then I'm sure he was a great guy and dug some great relics.  Sympathies for the loss.

Artillery / Orignal Field Gun Carriages

I was wondering what is the latest regarding existing (orginal) field gun carriages, either US or CS.  I have seen orginal limbers (I have been a docent at the Texas Civil War Museum where there is one with box, etc.)  I have assumed that if any did exist, they would be in pieces and in a state of conservation.  Wheels would be non-existant.  I know of serveral reconstructed gun carraiges with original iron.

Any general comments would be welcome.

Thanks-  Joe Walker

Thank you, Dave & Bob.  RedBob, I eMailed you some photos in response to your question.

My shells and fuses are grouped by type.  A few are labled, more have numbers that tie to a database, but cataloguing is super boring and I haven't kept up with it as I should have.  One of those things I'll always get around to someday...
