Hello All, first post here. I’ve been collecting more modern artillery ordnance for a while, but just picked up my first Civil War-era pieces. These came from the recent auction of items from the Philadelphia Civil War Museum. The solid shot was sold as a 42 pounder. When I got it, the bathroom scale says it’s 57 pounds. And someone actually wrote “56 lbs” on it in dark marker, though it’s not easy to see. I don’t have calipers this size, but the circumference is about 23 1/4”, from which I get about 7.4” diameter. Too large for a 42 pounder, and too small for an 8-inch shot. Seems like the right weight for iron for that diameter. And there you run out of what my research tells me. The second photo shows it next to an 8-inch shell. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
