Blow throughs
« on: June 18, 2012, 10:06:40 AM »
Wow, everyone must be on vacation.

Here are some blow-throughs from my collection.  This occurs when an air bubble or other weakness in the cast bullet causes the powder gases to penetrate directly through the bullet upon firing.  This is most commonly found in CS Gardner bullets.  Notice on the top row some specimens you don't see very often... .69 cal Raleighs (Carcanos) and a .69 French pattern triangle cavity bullet.

Jim, great blow throughs. I have seen French Triangulars before but never a Carcano/Garibaldi/NCIDDB before. If you watch eBay at all you will be amazed at how high the bidding will go on these things. I missed seeing a 69 French Triangular blow through on a table at the Vicksburg Show a couple of years ago and I was watching Stan's tables so he could go eat or just get up and moving for awhile and he came back with the dang thing. I think he told me he got it for $5.00.

I found both of my Gardner blow- throughs in fired bullets at tourist shops in Gettysburg. It pays to look.
