I found this possible artillery shell in Jackson, MS and think it could be from a breechloading Hughes gun. These guns were made by Street & Hungerford of Memphis. The state of Mississippi bought a number of them during the war and stored them in the armory in Jackson. This was found near that site.
They came in both smoothbore and rifled variations. The breechloaders were 1.5''-2'' in diameter. I'm having difficulty confirming this because this gun and its ammo are EXTREMELY rare and evidently not much is published regarding the ammo or the gun in question. I need a picture if possible to confirm. Can anyone on this forum assist? Thanks.
