My weekend
« on: May 16, 2011, 10:18:37 AM »
This is why I have been offline 3 days.

A friend of mine and I went out to pick up some things this weekend.  Included in them was something I have wanted for it seems like forever.  This is the piece de la resistance of my Civil War collecting, a 3-inch iron rifle manufactured by Noble Brothers of Rome, Georgia.  Date on the trunion stamp is March 1862.  The records indicate it was shipped to Richmond May 1 so it likely saw service in some of the most famous battles of the war.

I was so busy (& excited) I neglected to take any pictures until the tube was loaded up.  Here it is with some other goodies that followed us home.

Do I see two tubes in that truck! Truly a glorious haul - I hate to see it leave the South, but know it is in good hands up there in the Windy City. Congratulations!!!

Thanks Scott.  I posted a couple other things in the rafters of this trailer shot on the other forum.

Yes, there are 2 cannon in the trailer.  In a case of keeping up with the Jones', my friend had to get one too.  His is a field howitzer.

My tube was not in the South, but it will be soon (with me!)

Mike,          down right beautiful !!  Congratulations. You couldn't ask for a better historic, documented, Confederate States piece.  The holy grail of CW cannons........       now someone out there find him an original # 1  CS Tredegar manufactured carriage in a barn somewhere !!

I don't know if you saw the trunion that I have when you visited my house. I have one from Noble Brothers that is dated March 1862. I traded for it long ago. Noble moved to near Jacksonville Alabama and started a new town. The town was named for his daughter, Annie. The town is Anniston Alabama.

Great piece Mike. I may need to reconsider your elgibility into the great State of Texas without some bribery with a few of your smaller artificts (MM-268). Great catch on the tube.

I did see it Steve.  At that time I knew I was getting this cannon and made a comment about the desirability of having the rest of the gun.  The other two fellows got my inside joke, but you obviously were not in on what I was meaning.

You have a neat piece.  Presumably it was knocked off the cannon to disable it.  Do you know in what circumstances?

No... but there's still some good news.  Read below.

Mike has decided to secede from the People's Democratic Socialist Republic of Illinois... by moving lock, stock, and cannon-barrel down South, into the semi-independent OCSA (Occupied Confederate States of America).

Steve:  Interesting fact to know about Anniston.  You trunnion, like the rest of your incredible collection, was great to see.  I have a trunnion from an early Yankee Parrott but wasn't lucky enough to get one that whistled Dixie.  Maybe one day....

Texas has been close to succeeding again many times since the Civil War.  Mike moving there might just be what tips the scales.
Best,
Carl
