Description:Before production was standardized, paper time fuzes were made in different colors that signified the burn time per inch. Then they would be cut to the desired burn length. Both Gibbon's 1860 Manual and Roberts' 1860 Handbook have descriptions of the of the 2 1/4 inch fuzes.
Black 2 sec per inch
Red 3 sec per inch
Green 4 sec per inch
Yellow 5 sec per inch
This a a 2.25" fuze -- the later, more common ones are just 2" long.
It is marked 20 for 20 seconds. I realize 2.25" x 4seconds does not equal 20, but in practice the green ones come out of 20 second fuse packs, the red ones come out of 14 second fuse packs and the black ones come out of 10 second fuse packs. I also had some 2" long yellow ones one time from 30 second fuse packs.
