Description:
This late war Hotchkiss is a very nice dug specimen. It differs from the typical 3" Hotchkiss in that they have a thicker somewhat flattened base and the nose has no taper coming to a flat surface. As far as I know, none have patent dates on the bottom. They are fitted with the standard Hotchkiss time fuse adapter. Most are from Nashville though they have also been found at Spanish Fort, Bentonville and possibly Richmond.
This specimen has a perfect fuse adapter and nice sabot. The white sabot shows nice rifling from the 3" ordnance rifle that fired it. It also has great iron with no pitting. It is covered with old polyurethane over an uncleaned surface so the poly has lots of scratch marks that keep it from looking as good as it is. if the buyer would like, I can give it a little TLC and a new coat of polyurethane.
This one appears hand cleaned to me and not run through electrolysis. I believe it would have very smooth iron if cleaned with electrolysis.
This shell is from the great California based Bill Tracy collection.
Shell in inert, hand cleaned and coated.
