Description:
I've always like the projectiles from the 4.5" Siege guns. These included Hotchkiss, Schenkls and Dyers. These guns were quite big tp be on a carriage and could be hauled (with much effort) up to the lines to fire and do great damage. The Dyers have that distinctive look with the very large lead cup and the very rounded nose.
The iron on the front half of this shell is really nice with no pitting. It contains a Dyer time fuse that is far nicer than most I've seen. The bottom half of the shell has a very good sabot that is only marred by a gouge in the lead but the rest is in great shape. The sabot cup is still round and covers the entire shell body. This shells displays super.
While there was no provenance recorded for this shell, I feel quite certain that it is one of the ones found dumped into the Savannah River at the Augusta Powder Works in Augusta, Georgia. They Dyers all recovered there had the same mostly lead gray sabot with patches of white patina. There is also the tell-tale sign of a gouge in the lead sabot. This was presumably done to prevent their use before dumping them into the river.
This shell is from the great California based Bill Tracy collection.
Shell in inert, cleaned and coated.
