Description:
This is an example of the 4.62" caliber cannon ball which could have been used in a 12-lber smoothbore cannon or the 12-lber CS Coehorn mortar. This size cannon ball was used from the Revolutionary War through the American Civil War. The quality of manufacture would indicated it being made just before or during the ACW. It is not a polygonal cavity so we can't pin it down as CS manufacture.

The iron on this ball is quite good with just some light ground action but no pitting. The fuse hole is quite clean. This ball sits on a nice reproduction wooden sabot. We can tell it is reproduction as it is made from multiple wood pieces and also the size is slightly smaller than the ball where the original would be close to bore size. It displays quite well.

Additionally, a neat side bar on this shell is that it is from the collection of Jack Bell, the author of "Civil War Heavy Explosive Ordnance" or as most collectors call it: 'the heavy artillery book'. Jack has been collecting and sharing information about artillery for decades and is one of the hobby's greats.

Shell is inert, cleaned and coated.
