Hotchkiss are common projectiles to find in all campaigns of the Civil War. They come in as many or more calibers than most any other or, perhaps, any other type of projectile. They are common in the smaller calibers but not common in the larger calibers. This projectile is a smaller caliber but still very hard to find. The Hotchkiss didn't fare well in the Parrott guns I would guess this is due to their long bores. As such, the Hotchkiss for the 30 pounder is uncommon while the 20 pounder is downright rare. This round is one of the few 20 pounder rounds we've been able to offer for sale.

This projectile is for a 3.67 inch caliber Parrott rifle and is not to be confused with the round for the rifled 6 pounder gun we typically see. Notice the long length of the shell which is about 10" compared to 7.25" for rounds used in the rifled gun.

The iron is very good on this shell though it is uncleaned. It displays very well. I think it would clean up very nicely. You can clearly see the junction of the nose portion with the tell tale very rounded cup. There are a few chips from the thin lip of the cup from firing but it is mostly there. There is also a divot in the bottom of the base cup but I am pretty sure this is a casting divot from an air bubble or something. As you can see the lead band sabot was stripped off when fired and is not present. This shell used a wooden time adapter. It is an early model without flame grooves. It really is nicer than I describe it.

Don't miss this projectile! You can always upgrade if one with a sabot comes along but otherwise there will be a hole for a 20 pounder Hotchkiss in your collection for possibly a long time!
