Description:
Collectors term shells under the 2.9" caliber to be "Baby Shells". They are hard to come by and we rarely have them and when we do they are typically the US Hotchkiss shell. This baby shell is a Confederate Mullane shell and made for the 2.25' Confederate Mountain Rifle. These rifles were rare in themselves and did not see a lot of use. Most of these shells seen are from dumpings in the Savannah River at Augusta, GA and the Alabama River in Selma, AL. This one is from Augusta.
This shell has ground action over the body of the shell but no pits. The iron is hard. The fuse used was the paper time fuse in a wooden adapter. The wood adapter is still present. The sabot is a deeply cupped dish and is in great shape. IN the gap between the shell body and the sabot yo can see all three pins but they are nearly flush with the bottom of the sabot. This is the style that had the long bolt holding a wooden block against the sabot. The center bolt appears to have rusted to the point of breaking off so the bolt and wood en block are not present. The image of it next to the 3" Mullane is for size comparison only and that shell is not included in this sale.
This is a great opportunity to get one of these at a very reasonable price. I saw a nice one sell in Franklin for over $1200.
Shell is inert, cleaned and coated.
