Description:These grenades don't come up very often. They are very similar to the Ketchum grenade but unlike the Ketchum the do not use the fins for stabilization. This Confederate grenade used a long cloth tail like a kite. I suspect it would be much easier to ship and carry around than the Ketchum did without damage. For a plunger it used a pointed wooden dowel as opposed to the big metal disk plunger used by the Ketchum. Most of these CS grenades came from the Savannah River at the Augusta arsenal.
This example is in good condition. It wasn't cleaned well when coated and some of the polyurethane has popped off. I can give it some TLC before shipping and re-coat it. The iron is very solid with no pitting of any size. The mold seam is very evident on one side and somewhat evident on the other side. The end that held the cloth tail is open and clean where the wood plug that the tail attached to is gone.
The owner before me purchased this grenade from Tom Dickey from one of his catelogs.
Projectile is inert, mostly clean and mostly coated.
