Description:
This is a very nice example of a shell that is hard to get in good condition. You see lots of Schenkl common shells but the rounded nose case shot version with the combination fuse are much harder to find especially with good iron as this one has. This shell is further enhanced by being from a very desirous battle, Gettysburg.

The fuse body is in excellent condition with nearly no corrosion showing all the holes used in setting the time. The fuse plug is replaced as it was probably knocked off by the hard and rocky ground of the Gettysburg battlefield. A prior owner replaced the missing center plug with one that matches pretty well and fits firmly. There is a little grinding that was needed on the shaft that inserts into the fuse body but you can't see this unless you pull the plug out.

The iron has light ground action but no big pits and all 7 ribs are easily visible. There is what appears to me to be a dent in the iron on the curve of the nose from impacting rock which knocked the protruding fuse plug off the fuse body. This is clearly seen in the 5th image. Neat history!

A really good shell that with documented provenance and dug with a complete fuse would sell for around $850.

This shell has been disarmed, cleaned and coated.
