CS Paper Time Fuzes
« on: May 11, 2013, 04:02:28 PM »
Pictured is a document that I have just run across from the CS Laboratory in Macon Georgia.
In John Biemeck's book he writes about the existence a 1" CS paper time fuze, and mentions that there is no official documentation to that effect.  This document seems to supply that documentation as it mentions fuze plugs for 1" and extra long 4" paper time fuzes. What is also interesting is that it mentions Girardey Fuzes being made in different sizes to correspond to the different fuze plugs.
Enjoy

Very interesting.  I've never actually seen a Confederate or Union portfire, although I made some years ago from the instruction in the Ordnance Manual.  They worked very well, too!.  Does anyone have any in their collection they could photograph?

Mike,
Is that made of paper or wood, if paper what does it go in?

Others can corect me, but to my best ability it looks to be a paper tube with powder in the middle and then wrapped in thinner paper.  The end not shown above is open and looks like this:

Mike,
It appears to be 3/4 inches in diameter.  What sort of adapter does it fit into and for what shell?

John, I think these things are like the punk sticks we used as kids to ignite fireworks.  They were lit, then touched to the vent hole on the cannon to ignite it.

Exactly.  A portfire.  They are still manufactured for commercial fireworks.
