Ed Bearss Speaking in Murfreesboro
« on: July 12, 2012, 10:19:52 AM »
I have never had the pleasure but have heard that Ed Bearss talks are fantastic.  Carl considers him to be the greatest relic hunter ever because he found an entire gunboat (the Cairo).

FYI for those who may be able to make this presentation on the 17th:

I know this is an old post..................but I've been familar with Mr. Bearss since 1991 when I first saw him on Ken Burns "The Civil War" I thought he was a great speaker.

I've since learned he is also a former USMC Marine who served in WWII in the Pacific theater.

Wish he would stop over in Michigan for a CW presentation as I would attend!
But the enemy is here!, we did not want the fight, but the fight is here! R.E.Lee, 1993.

Yes, Mr. Ed Bearss is the greatest relic hunter of all time.  Not only did he find a Civil War ironclad gunship full of relics, he did it with research and a small hand held compass.  It still had loaded cannon on it!  Quite a find.   His life story is interesting too:

You'll notice in he image on Wikipedia seen below that he has a bad left arm that is from machine gun fire in WWII.  He is now nearly 90 (June 26, 1923) and still, as far as I know, giving tours of battlefields and talks at round tables.

But I'll have to admit the Arabia was a pretty good find too:

and a lot harder to recover.  It's even pre-ACW (1856) and was pretty loaded with relics as well although no cannon!
