Thanks for the positive reply. This same bullet seems to be listed in the Thomas & Thomas Handbook of Civil War Cartridges as a #172 A & C. I would ask T&T to take another look at the cone cavity as listed though.  Regardless of the outcome of this thread I think we all have had to take a step back & "re-look" this bullet pattern. Cut off bullet? Seperate bullet pattern...the Xperts seem to dis-agree. Hope you'all will visit www.TennesseeLead.com & we will take a look at  many more American Civil War Bullets.

Attached is a scan of tt172c.  Definately a typical cone cavity.   Also it is .58 cal. while I suspect the bullet you have is .54 cal. by its height to width ratio.  Going by the shape of the grooves, round cavity, and thick skirt, I stand by the "cut off Gardner" id.
