Frag ID help
« on: February 05, 2023, 03:03:18 PM »
I'm pretty new to the artillery side of collecting and would appreciate any help or opinions.  This fragment was found many years ago on the Alabama coast in an area that it could be Confederate or Union even possibly naval.  Sketching it out, the outer diameter would be right at 4 1/4" and the inner diameter of the fuse hole would be just under 1 1/2".  The threads are 5 or maybe 6 in 1/2" area.  Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Dave.   That piece of shrapnel appears to be from a 12-lber (4.62" caliber) cannon ball that used a Bormann fuse.  The thinner wall would seem to indicate it was of the case shot variety meaning it had lead or iron balls in it.  These were commonly used in all theaters of the war in many, many battles.  Thanks for sharing!
Best,
Carl

Thank you for your response Carl. I guess, based on the shape that I?d never considered it to be spherical. I have some 12# shells and holding it up in comparison, it matches up pretty well.
