Case Shot load
« on: February 07, 2023, 08:47:56 AM »
Is anyone aware of CASE shot having .95" iron shot loads?  The field I am working was well within range for rifled munitions (and easily 20lbers.) However, there is no documentary evidence of Union artillery with 400 yrd range of this rear area and rather obscure field.  In short, it is highly unlikely this field was within canister range, yet I have thusfar found a half dozen .95' iron balls (one showing impact.)  Thoughts?

Great question and very timely for me.  I recently bought a large shell collection.  In it were a few half shells.  One of those is a 12-lber case shot ball half with a brass underplug and large case shot balls of about an inch in diameter in black matrix.  I tested it with a magnet and they are iron.  In the next day or so I'll get a picture to post and see what the size of them might be.  But it certainly appears to be what you are asking about.  I don't recall ever seeing one before with this size case shot.
Best,
