Need help identifying strange bullet

Found this weird bullet at my civil war site. It has an hourglass shape to it with a conical base with 4 indentations in a cross pattern. It is around .52 caliber. Is it some weird early bullet design or is it possibly trench art?

It doesn't look like any Civil War bullet I've seen.  Closer to a cartridge box finial but not really that even.  Maybe wash it in soap and water some?

I would guess a carved bullet.
