Ed Bearss : 6/26/1923 - 9/15/2020

Sad news even if he did live a long life of 97.  Carl always said he was the greatest relic hunter ever because he found an entire US gunboat (USS Cairo).

Really sorry to hear this.  Such a wonderful man and I consider a real National Treasure.  Last time I saw him, he gave the keynote speech at Fort Fisher for the 150th anniversary.   Be at peace.

RIP Mr. Bearss,
One of my most memorable life experiences was being on one of his tours with my late father. He was simply amazing. His knowledge of detail and delivery was amazing. He was one of a kind and we have lost a giant. Prayers for his family. Gary

I remember a long time ago (early 90's) a fiend and I were in Vicksburg and visited the National Park visitors center.  We arrived to find a large crowd outside around a show and tell area they have with cannon tubes and a constructed trench to show how one would look during the war.  The speaker there was Ed Bearss.  It was my first time experiencing him.  It was really good needless to say.  I know why "After his retirement in 1995, he received the title Chief Historian Emeritus".  I later saw him speak on a subject near and dear to my collecting: The USS Cairo.  It was at the Atlanta Civil War Round Table.  He truly belongs on the "Remembering The Great Ones" list and will be missed.
Best,
Carl

Was fortunate to hear him speak on one of the tours. His knowledge and passion was absolutely the best! May he rest in peace after a job well done on this earth!
