It's Show Time!
« on: June 15, 2020, 11:24:52 PM »
I just wanted to make an announcement for those who might not know that there are a few shows scheduled to happen in the not too distant future:
     CANCELLED: Richmond - July 18th & 19th
     Chattanooga - July 25th & 26th
     CANCELLED: Marietta - August 8th and 9th
Mike and I keep the show schedule here:
      http://bulletandshell.com/Stuff/Shows.htm
The application for the Marietta Show is on their website, NGRHA.com, so you can download, print and mail in.  I mention it because in the past it wasn't there.  Please attend these shows as a vendor or patron to help keep them afloat.

 >:(   >:(   >:(  Well, we received word that the July 2020 Richmond Show is being cancelled.  I certainly understand the decision but was looking forward to a weekend of relics.

So far the Chattanooga and Marietta Shows are still on.  Time will tell.
Best,
Carl

Got a call today for the Chattanooga Show.  It is still on but they are going to require everyone that attends the show including dealers to wear a mask at all times if you are over 12.  You have to bring your own.  Not sure if they have some if you forget.  My wife says I act like a 10 year old so I guess I don't have to wear one but I will so I can act like a grown up!

Carl

They are doing a good job of outreach because I got a call too (& I am piggybacking on your table application).  Wearing a mask for 2.5 days sounds responsible but not a lot of fun.  Its going to be interesting to see what impact all the negatives (which, despite health risks, in my case include no flights to Chattanooga anymore and therefore a boatload of driving) have on attendance.  I heard from a customer today that his Dr. advised him not to go.  If I didn't have 3 side things planned this trip, I wouldn't go myself.  I still may roll those forward and bail.

I understand we may get news regarding Marietta on Thursday.  Keep us posted please!

To make a bad afternoon worse, while I was sitting on the side of the road in 99 degree heat with a flat tire from a Chicago pothole, Jon Patterson texted me that the Wheaton Show in late September has been cancelled.

Yes, the Wheaten is cancelled for 2020.  I had hoped to attend this year now that my construction project is finished.

Fortuntely the Chattanooga is still on for the July 25th weekend and doesn't appear it will get cancelled.  I spoke with the show promoters and they do not have a people or table limit.  But they are required to have 8 ' between the table rows.  Also row traffic will be one way and along with everyone wearing a mask..   So the place will be roomy but no big limitations.  Of note there was a gun show there last weekend and everything seemed to go OK with that.

For the August 8th weekend Marietta Show, they still plan to have it and are supposed to get confirmation early next week on it from the county.  Here is hoping!!!

Carl

I got word today that the Marietta Show has also been cancelled.  Chattanooga looks like it will happen. It may be the only show for quite a while.

The Chattanooga Show did happen and it was very nice.  I'm sure due to Covid the door wasn't robust but it was decent.  But the nice thing for the dealers is sales were very strong.  Dealers were buying and the show attendees were as well.  Everyone I talked to was talking about how good sales were.  I think it was that dealer inventory was low since we haven't had a show in quite a while plus people sitting at homie were going through withdrawals not being able to get to a show.  There was lots to buy as well though for me there wasn't a lot of artillery to buy.  I did pick up a few common shells and sold most of them there.  Bulk bullets were selling very well.   I did manage to pick up a pre-arranged 15-inch Bormann cannon ball.  It is likely the only battlefield found example.  It was a bear to move.  I got an ovation from Butch and Anita Holcomb (show chair people) and the front door security guard as we moved it from one vehicle to the other.  And the best part of the show was getting to see friends.  By far the best part.
Best,
Carl

A few years ago, I picked up a 15" ball at the Marietta Show and I can certainly feel for you. It now rests quietly in a corner where it can do no more harm.

It was nice to get out and overcome some fears in so doing.  Been 9 days since I was there, and I feel fine as do hopefully the other participants.

Although I was not able to stay as long as I normally do  ;) it was nice to see folks and commerce appeared to be brisk.  I did not see anything collection-worthy for sale for me personally, and I did not take anything to sell so I missed out on the commerce end of things.  Still, I did pick up and drop off quite a few things there and en route, including some Hale rockets, so the long drive paid for itself in that regard.

I hate to end on a down note, but there were some highly questionable items out for sale too.  I guess most of the shows have them, but it had seemed to die down for a while in the categories I care about at least.  I wish the promoters would get out of their chairs and do a walk around to check because a rank amateur could tell in several cases.  Some comments were made, but without policing authority, it didn't seem to matter.  I hope no newbies got screwed only to be turned off from the hobby when they eventually figure it out.

I think this event showed that, done properly, shows can probably go on in these unsettled times.  Of course, what happens in the broader world will have a big influence on that.

yes, Chattanooga was fun and successful.   Business was brisk between dealers on Friday, and the public on Saturday brought some money to the show also.  Sunday was pretty dry, and I did not sell much then. As always, I enjoyed hangin' with friends and talking artillery all weekend.   I had a good time and sold a lot and bought 'right' also.  Between shopping the show and stopping in on collections enroute, I actually added 5 shells to my collection,  (  Bell page 190 is one ! ), and a few really good fuzes ( one I had never seen before ).    Unfortunately, got a hefty speeding ticket going downhill out of the NC mountains over by Asheville.....  but, I'll go to the show and set up again next year. Hopefully Lookout Mountain park will be open by then

Redbob:  That may have been from me!  I sold two 15-inch solids at the Marietta Show 3 or 4 years back.  I can't remember which year for sure.  it was when the show had to temporarily move to the Fairgrounds as the Civic Center was undergoing some remodeling.  Those were some heavy bad boys!  I had to get my hand cart reworked after that show.

Found out earlier today that both remaining Mike Kent Shows -- Richmond and Franklin -- are cancelled.
