No you don't.  99% of the population are good guys like you.  Some of us may be a bit quirky, of course.  As my good buddy Jim T is fond of saying, "All of us are weird, just some of us are weirder than others."

Cris and All,
I have learned from a respected historian that the Cochran shell has right handed threads so it unscrews counter-clockwise looking from shell base.

John

Under magnification, the picture in Jack's book shows right hand thread.

Dan,
Sharp eye you have there, thanks for conformation.
I have permission from noted author and historian of Civil War artillery projectiles (Heavy), Jack Bell,  to release the following images to add greatly to this post. 3.4 inch and the sabot has 16 TPI, right hand threads; sabot grooved to allow propellant gasses to reach time fuse.

Kind Regards,
John

To All,
Dave the Plumber asked me to post images of his 6.4 inch Cochran shell.  Note it has a naval water cap time fuse.

John

RelicRunner asked me to post some images of his sabot to give a close up of it.   This certainly supports the notion that the manufacture would be hard for war time quantities.  To make fine threads that would securely hold the sabot would be a challenge in iron on something that large.

Best,
Carl

No doubt time consuming, however those threads were cut on a lathe.  Once the lathe is "jigged up" and the lathe cuts the threads automatically or at least by modern lathes. I would have thought that the sabot would have had left hand threads so as to tighten the sabot as the projectile spun right (looking from breech.

John
