Pyramid Scheme
« on: June 25, 2011, 08:51:02 PM »
My sister drove back from my parents' house in South Carolina today and brought my dedicated 10-inch ball and tongs.  They are now in their intended spot as the "capstone" of my cannon ball pyramid.

Dedication plaque:

Markings on the very nice foundational balls:

1) Star for Charleston or Columbia Arsenal on another 10-inch mortar ball:

2) Another star peaking out on a 10-inch Columbiad:

3) "D" believed to be for the Atlanta Arsenal:

Full view of the tongs.  Note folks that real cannon ball tongs don't have pointed ends like the ones used to haul ice or logs do

I may have to talk to a certain someone about getting the balls for another layer...

Great detail in the photo shots. Have you researched Captain Wagener or the German Artillery from Charleston. The 1903 dedication for 50th Anniversity of his membership. I guess I am confused and don't quite understand the dates, but it's not rare for me to be confused. Great relic Mike.

I really have not done a lot of research although a quick Google nets a lot:

Capt. Wagener's Co. Light Artillery (Co. A German Artillery)

Engaged in the following battles:

Port Royal SC (7 NOV 1861)
Charleston Harbor (AUG - SEP 1863)
Carolinas Campaign SC (FEB - APR 1865)

Many South Carolina "Antebellum units" organized themselves, I suppose as militia, well before hostilities broke out which is why the 50th anniversary in 1903:

Pete George posted a great piece on the letter stamps below on this thread: http://bulletandshell.com/forum/index.php?topic=162.0

Not sure about the "T."  "T" marked balls have been recovered near Wilmington, but thats about all I know.

I have seen a few 10" Columbiads with the T marking. Nobody seems to know where they were made, but they were found in a Confederate dump site along with D stamps and star stamps. I would really like to know, possibly in Wilmington? The dump site is near Wilmington.
