12 and 24 lb CS mortar tongs
« on: September 25, 2014, 08:41:19 AM »
recently received a 24 lb CS Mortar shell with tong holes. Aside from the obvious size difference, the 24 lb I received has different tong holes than my 8 inch shell. The 8 inch has slots with round indents inside, for standard blunt nose tongs for carrying and alignment. The 24 lb, and I assume the 12's, have just rectangular slots, with very little taper to the sides where the tongs would"grab", making it look unsafe to actually carry the shell with tongs.
Were these shells never designed to be actually carried with tongs, just aligned with them?
Does anyone have a pair of these miniature tongs they could post a picture of, so I could see the size and design difference?
