9 Inch Shot, ID please;
« on: March 02, 2012, 02:11:32 PM »
To All,
    Except for the hex nut in the base this projectile looks like apdr Parrott Bolt. The local Police EOD squad shaped charge throgh the base hex nut. The ogive appears to have an indent where a modern day 'windshield' would hve been crimped on, however, the sabot looks Parrott. The base hex nut is throwing me. Help Please.
Dimensions –
Length – 22.35”
Diameter ~ 8 15/16”
Weight ~ 233 lbs
Brass sabot ring ~ 1.84” wide & ~ ¼” thick
Base hex nut – 2.2” across the flats
Regards,
John

  It's a Butler.  Post-civil-war era US manufacture.

Pete,
After looking again at Butler's patent I concur with your I.D. An AP/HE projectile detonated by the heat generated by penetrated.  I wonder if the Police EOD squad probed their shaped charge hole in the hex nut to see if it went all the way inside into the HE cavityh.  you think they were still using black powder at this time?

John
