Artillery / Marshall, Texas Reads

A friend was asking me about a 3.3in Marshall, Texas Read I had so I got to looking at my little group of these uncommon shells.  I have 2 different 3in ones:  The one from Poison Springs has a copper sabot that goes across the bottom completely and the other one has a copper ring sabot with the iron base showing on the bottom.  There's the 3.3in on the left.

The fat one second from the right is a 3.8" which is not listed in any books.  These were for captured James rifles and dumped on the Jenkins Ferry retreat.  I only know of 2 of them, both from the same recovery area.  Unfortunately, I don't have either the 2.25" or 3.5in types shown in D&G.

Been meaning to post some eye candy here for a year or two and am finally getting around to it!

That's cool.  I have seen other iron relics fused together from being dumped in water in a pile.  I have a canister plate with friction primers and rocks fused to it from the Alabama River at Selma, for example.  I am sure Steve Phillips has seen a lot as have folks who worked the dump cache in the Oconee River at Milledgeville.  Congrats to your Dad.

https://imgur.com/a/CGaUZl5 Has anyone ever seen anything like this before? My Dad dug this absolutely wild 12lb solid that has a fragment from another 12lb ball completely fuzed to it. Carefully cleaning it, it almost looks like it could have been welded on. We're afraid to do electrolysis on it. We know it's a legit Civil War ball (we have found many others). Any thoughts on this find?

Some pictures of the other side would be helpful.  As Mike says, hard to say from the angle shown.

Here are a couple fuses with the copper disks. Very hard to find them still on the fuse.  The one with the cross slits like Steve's also came from the river in Selma and is one of the high lip CS Bormanns.   Could well be that type copper disk only went on the high lip variety or any type from Selma.  Steve:  Is the example in your image a high lip style?

Hello,

Welcome back and congratulations on the retirement.  I have been decent at acquiring bullets but not organizing and displaying them well.  It is my plan to tackle that this summer.  I'm still trying to figure out how I want to build my relic room which will happen once I finish my barn build.  This is the year of organization.  I plan to go back and revisit some of the conversations on displaying bullets.

As to the forum being slow it is largely due to the passing and health changes of a few key members that were avid posters.  Most people just lurk and read, which is fine.  A few will respond to a post which helps fuel discussion.  But without the people that initiated and sustained the discussions, it has gotten slow.  Mike and I have jobs, do about 13 shows a year and put on a show just north of Richmond so our time is limited.  But we are getting longer in the tooth and might be able to retire one day and hopefully have more time to become one of the initiators.

Ronnie: I hear you.  I had hoped the last forum software upgrade I did would have had a mobile phone capability to allow it to work better on them but no such luck.  When I get a sec I'll see if there might be something now or something in the works.

That has always been the problem with this site. Photos are difficult for old farts like us to post.
