New to the group. I live in Louisiana and am a marine archaeologist by profession. Did my thesis on the USS Peterhoff sunk off the coast of North Carolina in 1864.
My question is has anybody here ever heard of stone cannonballs being used in North America? I have heard of stone cannonballs being recovered from Spanish Armada shipwrecks (1588) but nothing later. I found a stone cannonball listed as coming from a 1715 Fleet shipwreck on Ebay. It has been my experience that all the cannonballs found on these wreck sites were iron.
Any ideas regarding a stone cannonball and its origin. The guy selling it is from Virginia. He insist it is legit and authenticated.

Welcome to the group. I don't know much about stone cannon balls but id stay away from it. Just my opinion.

Speaking as someone who had spent over 15 years as a member of the old ebay fakebusters site, we have had numerous discussions about this seller. He is a fraud and a shyster. Nothing he sells can be trusted. Nearly all the Civil War items he lists also include a fake family letter, or have been identified to a specific person that participated in the War. Most of the items he offers are flat out fakes, misrepresented real items with false heritage, or overpriced items.
He is a horrible human being.

Because mostly uneducated people buy his too good to be true offerings. They don't know any better. Think about how many authentic native american trade axes in museum quality condition that may exist in this world. He sells 10 of them every month...

That is sort of the answer I was expecting. I have seen stone cannonballs from the Spanish Armada (1588) but nothing as recent as the 1715 Fleet. So let's assume the provinence is fake, is it even a "real" stone cannonball?
Regarding the Peterhoff. The 32-pounders are at Fort Fisher. The Parrot Rifle is on display on the grounds at UNCW (University of North Carolina at Wilmington) All are awesome.

I highly doubt it, especially given the source. Just because something is spherical, doesn't make it a cannon ball. There are lots of round "stone" objects that a faker could pass off such as these:

got me on a faked patined bayonet a few months ago( with letter of course). the patina was put on with rust and spray paint. the bayo underneath was old, but over cleaned and once I had modified it with cleaning it wasn't returnable. won't be tempted again by him
