Just curious is there a reason the Federals did not make shells with lines of weakness like the Confederates did and the Britten. It seems to have worked rather well. I assume that's where they got the idea for the 20th century pineapple grenade.

NO reply here probably because no one is sure why. I've always wondered why they weren't prevalently used by the Yanks in their shells as it certainly was a good idea. Perhaps they thought they got more fragments on average out of one that wasn't segmented. I'm also somewhat surprised that the Rebs didn't use faceted sand cores in all round and rifled shells to help them fragment evenly.
