While not the time period we mostly discuss, here is a WWII bomb being detonated in England:

Did they have a control experiment to show how much of that dirt and smoke was from the old bomb and how much was from the explosives used to "control" the detonation or is this merely a titillating video without any context?

Amazingly they spent two days getting the bomb ready to blow up by packing sand around it and evacuating the area.  It shut down the interstate and rail for two days.
