Title: Back from my own personal march through Georgia
Post by: emike123 on August 11, 2013, 03:35:22 PM
Met up with the lads in Georgia over the last couple days.  No boring museum basements this trip -- first stop was cannon firing in a remote location.  LaZouave and Rommack you guys were missed this year.

My first ever firing:

Call me "Robin Hood" Jr.  Eat your heart out Relicrunner!

Next we were feted by our gracious host ScottFromGeorgia.  Aside from him, here is a rogues gallery of revelers.

The Marietta Show was fun too!

Hello,

Here is RelicRunner blasting away at those northern invaders!  Click on the image below to watch a short video clip.  The cannon is a reproduction Leeds 6 pounder.

Yes, it's pretty cool.  Much more impressive to fire rounds rather than air.  I was surprised there wasn't more recoil.  From off to the side you could easily see the shot travel through the air even though it was only a 6 lber.  A heavy shelling at one of the battles by lots of cannon would have been something to see.  I can't imagine being among Ruggles batteries at Shiloh.

Cool. Can't imagine the fear I would have being shelled during a battle. How did men charge batteries? Insane.

Your first ever firing huh, that's pretty cool. Around here there is a gun crew that drags a field piece around to all kind of functions, mostly weddings, and they shoot that thing whenever they get a chance. I have a knack somehow of showing up just at the time they are getting ready to fire so I always wait for it. It always does something to me, usually brings a tear to my eye for some reason. But those old guys that shoot that thing love shooting it and I am glad. However there was one time when I was not so pleased. They were set up across from my favorite dive spot and I didn't see them. I was coming out of the water and was making my way across some very slippery ballast stones and they shot that thing(they call it Thor) just at that time and it startled me in a big way. I didn't fall but it  probably was entertaining to watch as I jumped and fought for balance. I talked to the gun crew and now they warn people .So Mike I am sure that shooting that thing was a good rush and I am glad you had the chance.
