early grenade????
« on: August 28, 2015, 09:54:47 AM »
Here is something that I just picked up...for free.  What is it?

It is dug, and looks like a colonial-era grenade.  Too small to be an artillery shell I would guess.  It is about 3 inches in diameter; about 2 pounds; walls are about 1/2-inch thick (at most, hard to measure); fuse hole is 5/8-inch.  There is an obvious mould seam all the way around and a raised sprue mark.  See pics.

What do you think?

Sure looks like a grenade.  I'll check mine when I get a chance and see how it compares.
Best,
Carl

I've been told that that size and form is a Colonial Era naval boarding grenade.  Definitely not an artillery shell, due to the un-removed moldseam and un-removed mold vent sprue.  Its crudeness suggests manufacture by the American Rebels.

Pete
