Nice collection of my favorite caliber shells and bolts. Why did you go with 3.3"?
-
I seem drawn to odd CS calibers, also like 2.25 , but not many variations. Intrigued by the reuse/ rebore/ makedo idea showing the ingenuity of people
-
I am thinking about doing the same with Tennessee sabots, but when it comes down to it I am interested in any shell that is a good deal that I dont already have in my larger collection. Condition is a very important issue to me as well.
-
Anyone who knows me is aware my favorite sub-collection is James.
Front Row
3.8" Pre-war Prototype James Bolt - 8 flange
3.8" James Canister Base
2.6″ James Bolt for Wiard Rifle
Nose fragment and fuse
3.8" James Hot-Shot
Middle Row
3.8" James Shell - Type 2 with Sabot
3.8" James Bolt - Type 1 no Sabot
3.8" James Shell - Type 2 with half Sabot
3.8" James Bolt - Type 2 with Sabot
3.8" James Shell - Type 1 with Sabot
Back Row
6.4" James Bolt
7 inch James Shell
7" James Bolt
4.62" James Shell

no Jealousy here Jon, I only want 4 of those ;D. hotshot base has been on my list a long time, and really like the 8 flange proto. Very Nice. Tennesse's are also very nice, One of my favorite shells is my 2.25"
-
Why did both of you choose to start a sub collection? By accident or plan?
-
The Hotshot was picked up in Franklin the first year I was there. The proto was picked up in Wheaton 2 years ago. The canister base is my most recent. Mike helped with locating a good portion of The James Gang.
2.25" would be nice size to collect, especially since I am redoing a family room to make a Relic room andwill soon be moving everything downstairs. At least I don't have cannons to move. :)
-
When I started collecting I always liked the look of the James so intended to target them. However I also like the idea of more scarce shells, so added some of them to the mix. Other cheaper types of shells I like trying to get one of each family merely to show what they look like compared to the other types. So I guess you could say James started as my primary interest but then became a sub-collection by my not being able to stay focused.
-
My collection started cheep, 5 shells for $350, nothing uncommon. then I got a few more cheep shells and then a book. then found out how many variation of shells there are. I spread funds acrossed 5-6 fields ( bayonets obviously) and decided I wanted example of different looking shells. while doing this, I found 3.3 was mainly just CS, shells varied wildly in shape and size and I like odd calibers, not just 3.3's now. , then there are REV war marked shells, and 70+ shells later still don't have all I want
-
Alwion and Jon, very nice group in your sub collections!
-
Oh man, the James shell is my favorite Yankee shell. Drooling over here >:(.
-
after looking for some shells realized that subcollections are numerous in a large collection, but here are two mor picts of where I got sidetracked on a subcollection
rev war
american 6lb bar
british 9 lb bar
american chain 4 lb
british arrow marked
-
canisters, tried to get really varied styles, incl dyer and hotchkiss. 2.6"to 12 lb, 12 lb grape
-
Nice additional sub-collections Alwion.

I like this thread and have been trying for several days to upload videos of a couple groups with commentary, but John Bartleson must be getting his revenge from the Beyond by thwarting my video uploading attempts via Photobucket so here are two still shots of a couple of my own sub collections:

That is really nice. I love the finned Archer. I remember at the Richmond Show quite a number of years back a guy walked in with one he had just found in the Richmond area the day before if I recall correctly. I remember it was found at some construction site.
-
sighhhh I'm in Love
-
Oh my, impressive.
-
Very nice Mike!!!
-
I too loved the finned archer. I am on a cops salary so I will never own one, I'll just drool on my computer screen. Carl are you going to Charleston this year. I met you last year at Charleston. We will be there. I think Dicky will be getting a couple of tables so I will be going and helping him. We were going anyway but I will enjoy helping him.

Bumping this topic back up with a pic of my fuses
-
Nice, Steve! My neck hurts looking at them ;)
-
like the fuses too
-
Just trying to prove you don't have to be old to struggle with technology.
-
Nice thread. I like them all but my favorite Federal would be the James type 1 and on the Confederate side, all of the reads and archers
