Last year I read this book:
http://www.amazon.com/The-Artillery-Gettysburg-Bradley-Gottfried/dp/1581826230
and gained a new appreciation for the role of artillery at Gettysburg. We always hear of the major infantry movements, but the artillery role, except for the bombardment preceding Pickett's Charge, gets short shrift. The information in this book, and it talks of Cushing too of course, was really interesting to me.

His brother was William B. Cushing, my personal hero, well known for daring exploits on the water, also referred to as Lincolns Commando. I guess fearlessness runs in the family.
