Title: Iron ring found with CS 24 pounder

Recently we found this iron ring and I need help trying to identify what it is. It is crudely made and measures 5 1/2 inch wide, the protrusion sticks up 1 inch, the width is 2 inches. One side of the ring is 1/4 inch and tapers to a sharp edge on the other side. We have found cannon parts in this area at Selma. This ring was found with a 24 pounder CS case shot. It's from the war but I don't know what. Maybe cannon related or wheel part. Any help is appreciated.

Looks like the nave box for a cannon wheel to me.  I believe that is the what they call the metal cylinder in the center of the hub that fits over the end of the axle.  The end of the axle tapers which is why the inside of your cylinder does.  The protrusion is to keep it from slipping inside the wooden wheel.

I think you're probably right but I have been unable to find an example like this.
