I haven't been able to ascertain info on how the projectiles with paper fuses (and others for that matter) for rifled tubes were protected when the ramming staff was applied and pushed down the tube.  Where they recessed? Cupped?  How were smooth bore (round) projectiles positioned?  With fuse to the muzzle, or breech? I haven't been able to see originals to learn this.

Thanks!

Some rammers had a cutout in the end so as not to mash the fuse.  The fuses on shells in the tube faced toward the muzzle end.

I am still looking for information regarding the ramming staff.  If a paper time fuze, or most fuzes for that matter, the ramming of the projectile could damage the fuze.  I am asking if anyone out there has seen a ramming staff or rammer that has a recessed end to accept the paper time fuze?

Thanks.  Joe

Go to www.armyoftennesseerelics.com and click on artillery. About half way down the listing, I believe that you will find your answer.
