Title: 30# Parrott Fusing
Post by: pipedreamer65 on May 18, 2017, 08:37:10 AM
Anyone ever seen any type 30 pdr with naval water cap fuse in it?  I've seen them in a 20#, 60#, and 200#

Didn't know if there were a provision made for those as I have only seen Parrott time/west point style, percussion and Schenkl Navy.

Thanks!

I have seen a 30pdr with a regular naval watercap in it and also with a Parrott watercap fuse adapter.  I don't have time to post a picture right now, but will if desired at a later time.

Very good Sir, no picture necessary.  Is that combo somewhat rare?  Thank you!

I think so because you don't see them too often.  Mine with a naval watercap came out of Mobile Bay.

I figured it existed, albeit uncommon.  I thought I'd ask here as some of you guys have laid eyes upon many more projectiles than I have had the opportunity to.  Regards!

30 lb Parrotts with Navy watercap fusing is not uncommon around here. Quite a few have come from Ft Fisher.

Really now?  Do they have the zinc/white metal bushing as to screw into the parrott threading?

Pipe,    Also from our area, Parrot shells have been found with Hotchkiss fuzes,  Schenkl percussion fuzes , the brass body rare Parrott percussion fuze, the Parrott watercap fuze and I have seen 2- 30 lb'ers with, believe it or not - Schenkl combination fuzes.         And I have a watercap fuze from a blown 30 lb'er that the adaptor bushing is brass, not zinc.            Come visit !!

Question:  Is the shell cast to accept a Schenkl fuse or watercap fuse or is the fuse made to match the Parrott threads?  It would seem confusing to me that the shells would have different thread patterns.

the shell is cast for the Schenkle fuse and the sleeve is an adapter for the ORD fuse

Yea, that's interesting.  I have a 30 from down there that has typical size schenkl (not navy) fuse in it.  Nice to hear from yall about local finds  :)
