The abbreviation for Georgia was written Ga. until 1963, when the Post Office changed it to GA, as in the stamp. It would always have had a period before 1963.

This brings to mind a conundrum of mine- can anyone recommend a source for determining what period a stamping might date to? I have an 1858 Remington New Model Army with "CS" stamped into the wood halves of the butt of the grip. The patent markings are missing from the top of the barrel and my best guess is someone once tried to pass it off as Cornfederate. I don't know if fonts over the ages have enough distinction to them to be indicative of the period in which they were used.
TIA for any help/response!
