Any way to tell if the 6lb is Confederate or not ?
« on: December 15, 2022, 05:26:29 PM »
Non dug but no fuse.  Distinct mold seam around the equator of the shell.  Fuse threads do not go all the way to the bottom of the fuse hole but I do not see any real channel at the bottom for a leather washer.  I can?t get the base plug out and really don?t want to damage it.

Have washed out a decent amount of  powder through the base plug hole and believe this to be a case shot.  Hitting a hard section about 2/3rds of the way down through the shell where it seems the powder charge terminates.

Without any exaggeration, 99% of the time a Bormann-fuzed shell has an iron support-plug (a.k.a. "underplug"), it is yankee-made. If the support-plug is brass, it is Confederate-made. (I've been closely studying sawed-in-half shells for several decades.)
