Help Identify a couple of Port Hudson Minies
« on: February 22, 2012, 03:04:51 PM »
This is a 69 cal solid base 3 ring nose cast minie.  It mics at .668 in diameter and 1.15 in length.

It has a small tit cast into the base.  I have seen several dug from Louisiana and Port Hudson.  Thought it could be that the
portion of the mold that makes the cavity was not used, but looking at the minie just doesn't seem to be the case.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I think you're correct about the missing base plug.  It has the typical .69 cal. RM profile.  It was nose cast and the odd impression was probably just caused by whatever they sat the mould on while pouring the lead in.  That must be one heavy bullet!

Rommack,
good to see you posting my friend.
Here is a base pic of the flat base .69 cal with the weird indention in the base.
Coonboy dug this one at the Mansfield, LA battlefield in 1974.
Since I have seen yours in person I can say they are almost identical.
Sorry for the poor quality pic, but it is mounted in a fram as you can tell.

Welcome to the forum Rommack,

I want to thank yall for posting the 69 pics now I have another bullet to try to locate to place in my collection.  :'(  With the kidding aside the bullets are interesting and I don't recall seeing a bullet poured with leaving the base plug out and leaving a dimple. What I have seen is normally just a flat base. Thanks for sharing.
