My idea for new shelves
« on: November 03, 2013, 04:00:58 PM »
Since things are slow lately in the forums, I thought I would show off the new shelves I built to display most of my collection. Not being much of a craftsman, I decided to go simple and cheap. I did a take off from the old boards and milk crates shelves from my college days.

Instead of milk crates the risers are wood tubes. Wood blocks are bolted to the top and bottom of each shelf that somewhat loosely fit into the hollow risers, holding the parts together, yet allowing a little give for the wood shelves as the adjust to the weight. If needed they can be taken down quickly and moved without the need for tools. While a bit wobbly to begin with, after the shells were placed on them, they became surprisingly stable.

My big boys remain on a repurposed aquarium base.   Yes I am resourceful........or cheap.   :)

Very nice.  I like that.

Pretty darn nice iron there too.  Some really rare and appealing items on display.
Best,
Carl

Its all good until some toddler tries to scale those shelves!

I like them, and agree -- save your $ for iron, not wood.  Some of those look familiar so I am all in favor of sending me your money vs. Home Depot.

Thanks for the great pictures, I always enjoy seeing other collections and how they are displayed.
Your not the only one sending Mike your lunch money! ;D
I will say that of all of the artillery dealers, Mike and Carl have been the most helpful and easy to deal with.
Any time I have a question regarding shells or fuses, Mike seems to always have time to reply.
That means a lot to a relatively new collector that is sill learning.

Thanks John.  Mike and Carl have been very helpful to me also since recently starting to collect artillery related items. They are both very approachable, knowledgeable and by offering the website and forums allows easy access to the vast knowledge of the many participants and nice reasonably priced items from collectors not inflated prices of people only in it for the money.

Hello,

Thanks for all the kind words.  We have very deep interest in the hobby and are absolutely collectors at heart.  Many of the people on here we have known for many years and consider them close friends.  Everybody else is an old friend in the making!

Best,
Carl

I like to try to find items at yard sales that I can re-purpose to display my relics. I collect mostly iron. I found these CD shelves earlier this year and used them to show off my some shell fragment collection. Look closely MW and you will see some items that came from you.

I've seen Jim's display and those shelves are perfect for what Jim utilizes them for.  There are some really cool frags on display as well.  Seeing what people are using is great as it give me ideas for when I can finally build a display room for my treasures.  I like the wood look for display shown by Mike, Jon and Jim.
Best,
Carl
