Touche.  The mortar is cool even if the bed is different from others I have seen, but I have my eye more on the limber, caisson and that 6pdr on the original carriage.  All this stuff was up here near me but the owner died and the good stuff went to this auction back down in Dallas.  Some of my friends up here used to shoot his guns over in Michigan, but I never had the opportunity to visit there  :(

Oh for the want of space for our toys...

I tried to make you rpoud of me, Scott, but it got away from me.  I hope the phone buyer who bought it could hear the auctioneer mention the "just in" info that the bed was not original after all....

And lest anyone worry that maybe the market for projectiles is not back and then some.  Look at this crazy money.  The better of the two was a relative bargain!

Some of the engraved Gettysburg shells were engraved recently. I know of a sleeved read shell from a few years ago that had dark sides with shiny engraving. Some of the engraved area had bright red/orange rust which screamed new oxidation to me. The engraving was a little strange as well. There seams to be a few at the show every year in Gettysburg.

That Pickett's charge Read that Mike has pictured above has an odd colored rust on it.  Looks to me like they took a shell, engraved it, ran it thought electrolysis and then left it out to rust.  As you say, it has a new oxidation look.  But I guess it's real hard to say unless holding in your hand for a close look.

         I wonder who are these people buying the shells for that kind of money ??  I believe I have seen similar ones sold for less than two thousand buckaroo's.  I personally would be very skeptical of any of these, either as post war souveniers from wherever [= now Gettysburg ] , or modern attempts at deceit, which after these prices realized I'm sure more will surface........      I guess they are doctors or lawyers wanting a 'true' Gettysburg piece for their desk or mantle........

I think they are relics for dummies, meaning that you can set them out and everyone can immediately recognize how important they are. So they enter a different market than the real collectors market.

Paid $35 for this frag with the Danner Museum stencil mark 2 years ago at the Marietta Show.  Like the Plumber, I would love to know who these fools and their money are.  If any of you are lurkers on this site, please PM me!!!!
