I was curious if there were any reports in the past of wildfires setting off Civil War ordnance on battlefields

I read an article about Yankees growing cotton on the Port Hudson battle ground months after the siege. The Carpet Baggers moved in and were using freed slaves to help burn the overgrown fields so they could plant when artillery shells left from the battle started going off and all the field hands ran for their lives.

I read about the same thing happening in the Wilderness (VA) area years after the war was over.

This is why we shouldn't have loaded ordnance in our house should it catch fire. Not fair to the fireman.
