Very interesting cartridge and a great find.
I am a bit confused (not unusual) about how this cartridge was used. From the pictures, I am assuming that the cartridge is made of thin iron and is loaded in a muzzle loading rifle musket. Would the cartridge remain in the barrel when the musket was fired? If that is the case, how is the cartridge extracted? I think that I must be missing something here.

OK I think that I get it now!
The powder and bullet are rammed down the barrel and the iron cartridge remains at the muzzle.
I'm not quite as quick to understand things now that I'm old and senile.

Very, very neat. I've never seen this described before.    While maybe not practical in the field it does seem a good idea at the onset.

Now that I have a better idea of how these cartridges were used, does anyone know of a rifle musket with the depressed rabbet?
Without giving away the location where these were found, are these eastern or western?
Very cool cartridge and I hope he finds more.
