Mac Mason Burnside cartridge
« on: May 05, 2015, 11:52:12 AM »
I just acquired this "Mac Mason" piece.  I can't just sit by and let Emike and Dave Slemmer buy up all of this stuff.

That's a beauty!   I know that with artillery shells there's a premium for Mac Mason artwork....Is there a premium for Mac Mason cartridges?

Assuming the writing is intact and good, but not something spectacular like "picked up off Jeff Davis' bedstand," what do you guys think the premium is?  150%-200% of normal?

With common bullets, his writing takes a $3 bullet and turns it into a $30 one, but that math is skewed by the low staring point.  On shells my guess is it is in the 150% range, but I am open to other folks' observations.

Common bullets written on by Mac, in nice shape, start at about $30. If his description is lengthy even more. Less common bullets like Nesslers, New Austrians, etc. are 2-300% their price. When I first started collecting his relic prices were cheaper and more items to be found. Now when I see something on Ebay the competition often finds me overpaying just to get it. Ken Price, Plez, a few of us are Mac collectors and snap up anything that comes available. I've been lucky and have stumbled upon some "uncommon" items like plates, lock plates, knives, etc. just picked up a small collection in which I picked up a nice Confederate spur, a box plate and a round ball in wood. The bullet in wood was a few hundred bucks, which is crazy, but it might be the only one I ever get a shot at.
