Here's a large artillery fragment that was found at the battle of Chickasaw Bayou north of Vicksburg, MS. It was at the site of a naval bombardment. This elongated fragment has 1.5'' thick walls and has sabot flanges around the base that was made with the shell. The flanges are 1.75'' in width. I also have a photo of a 6 pounder from my collection alongside the fragment to give it a size comparison. Any help is appreciated. I'm trying to determine the type of shell this was.

That fragment is from a Dyer Shell. I hope that helps. Gary

Fantastic! Thanks for the email and confirmation. Did Dyer shells come in different weights? Was this from a 100 pounder shell? Was it fired from a 42 Pounder rifled gun?

Yes, they weigh bout 84 pounds with the sabot and are fired from the rifled 42-lber gun. You can get more info on Jack's CivilWarArtillery.com page:
