The cross-reference in
A Handbook of Civil War Bullets & Cartridges
has the MM 631 as the TT 78 .50 Maynard.
I don't know of any .50 "French Carbine".
Hope this helps.

Thanks, Tom
Maybe it is just a plain old Maynard.

They have been recovered in limited quantity near the Post of Arkansas where the Confederate winter quarters were located, possibly associated with Texas cavalry. I know of one other recovery near Vicksburg.

tmark, I have a MM-631 that was recovered from Arkansas Post from the Confederate barracks. The dimensions are .503 x .774 x 260 and I have mine in my Trans-Mississippi section listed as a Texas Cavalry Carbine.

Hopefully these photos will attach. Playing with a new software and my MM-631 isn't near as nice as tmarks.

tmark, since it's just a plain ole Maynard I will be glad to pay you premium price to place next to my plain ole Maynard from Arkansas Post. What part of Arkansas did yours come out of?

Thanks, mbfrompb,Etex,
I thought this bullet might be different. It came from what I think could be a small confederate camp near St.Paul Ar.
