Help with bullet ID?
« on: January 22, 2016, 07:04:33 PM »
Found what looks like a lead bullet in upstate South Carolina, but am not sure how to date it. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Very interesting. It appears to have two grooves and was fired. Some measurements might help.

Thank you, Tom.  It is .56" wide at the bottom and 7/8" tall

The bullet has been fired which distorts it. It appears to have been base-cast. There is the obvious groove near the base and there looks to be a horizontal line above the deep groove. I'm not sure if that line is from a groove or if this is from a cartridge case being crimped there. This is just a guess but it may be a fired Sharps and Hankins (125 in Jim and Dean's A Handbook of Civil War Bullets and Cartridges.)
Hopefully some of our more learned forum members give their opinions.  :)

Thought it was a Sharps & Hankins from the get go.  Good eye, Tom.
