Title: Brooke Sabot Mark
Post by: CarlS on November 16, 2015, 10:40:39 PM
Hello,

I bought a sabot to a 30 Pounder (4.2-inch Caliber) Brooke shell at the Richmond Show.  It was recovered at Petersburg.  On the bottom is stamped "W C".  I see that one pattern in Jack Bell's book is stamped with a "C".  Anyone know if "W C" is the norm and perhaps the "W" on Jack's is not legible?  Are there other stampings on these sabots?  Thanks for any input.

Yes. As soon as I get a chance to unpack I'll get some.

I have three, one of which has the "W.C." mark and the other two are unmarked.  One of the unmarked ones is the nice condition sabot on the bottom of the exact 30pdr rebated Brooke shown in Bell's book.  I know it and the other unmarked one (off a shell) were recovered near Fort McGilvery at Petersburg.  I think the marked one which is on a smooth sided 30pdr is from there too, but not positive until I do a little research.
